Reviewer's Summary: Very Good Dosa; Horrible Coffee; Good Service

Dosa Diner is built on the solid edifice of a competent kitchen.

And the results show in the wide array of items we enjoyed at this Long Island vegetarian restaurant on Broadway in Hicksville.

Old timers may remember that Dosa Diner is located in the same spot occupied previously by Saffron and before it by Sansar in the late 1990s.

Ghee Roast Masala Dosa (an old favorite of ours from the 1960s and 1970s) was an absolute delight. A treat to both the eyes and the palate, the crisp Ghee Roast Masala Dosa had everything in balance with a tasty potato/onion filling inside.

Onion Tomato Chilli Uttapam was as good. The fairly large Uttapam came hot to the table and was delicious even without the Chutney.

With the accompanying Coconut Chutney, spicy Ginger Chutney and the delicious eggplant/onion Sambar, the Dosa and Uttapam were beyond reproach.

True to its name, Dosa Diner serves a variety of Dosas. Butter Masala Dosa, Cheese Mysore Masala Dosa, Gun Powder Dosa, Chennai Masala Dosa, Paper Masala Dosa, Oriental Dosa and Dhaniya Masala Dosa are some of the choices available here.

And, how we gorged on those soft and tasty Idlis.

Rasam was delicious, its flavor a little subtler than at other South Indian restaurants we've been to in the New York area.

It's not just the Dosas that got our attention at Dosa Diner.

Lemon Rice and Yogurt Rice (commonly referred to as Curd Rice by Indians) are items not to be missed.

Aloo Varuval and Keera Bonda made us gluttonous!
Beetroot Halwa dessert was lip-smacking good. We salivate at the mere thought of Dosa Diner's Beetroot Halwa.

As we were rejoicing in our good fortune at discovering such a fine South Indian restaurant, fate intervened cruelly in the form of Madras Coffee. For a South Indian restaurant, making fine Coffee ought to be a cakewalk.

Alas, Dosa Diner's Madras Coffee was an outrage. Worse than the worst coffee we've had in the New Jersey Turnpike rest areas. It had too much milk and since it was closing time we suspected we had been served the dregs of the decoction that go into making Madras Coffee. For some of the finest Coffee in the New York area, head to Madras Cafe in the East Village.

Masala Chai was no better. Again, far too much milk and none of that spicy flavor that gives Masala Chai its delicious flavor.

Our friendly waiter Siva from Madurai (a city in the state of Tamil Nadu) was attentive throughout and left little room for complaint.

Like a lot of South Indian restaurants, Dosa Diner also offers a variety of North Indian curries presumably to attract a wider clientele. We tried Sarson Ka Saag and found it tasty.

Prices are reasonable for the exemplary quality of the food here. Dosas start at $4.50 for the Plain Dosa and can go up to $7.50 for the Onion Rava Mysore Masala Dosa or Cheese Chennai Masala Dosa.

Dosa Diner in Long Island (Hicksville) is a South Indian restaurant worthy of your attention and utmost respect. - © Rekha Inc.
